NMN is a polar, water-soluble nucleotide. In solid form it is usually a white to off-white powder. The compound is sensitive to heat, light, moisture, and extremes of pH, and aqueous solutions tend to degrade faster than dry material. Recommended storage for research samples is typically -20 °C or below in a sealed, desiccated container protected from light. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided, and these handling practices help maintain identity and purity during laboratory use.
Analytical identification of NMN commonly uses high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy; HPLC can estimate purity by peak area, while mass spectrometry confirms molecular mass and fragmentation. NMR provides structural confirmation. Because NMN is charged, ion-pairing reagents or hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography columns can improve retention and peak shape. In biological samples, LC-MS/MS with stable isotope internal standards is often used to quantify NMN and related NAD+ metabolites. Method validation is important because matrix effects and rapid enzymatic interconversion can complicate measurements.
The term NMN commonly refers to the beta isomer, in which the nicotinamide group is attached to the ribose through a beta-glycosidic bond. Commercial material may be supplied as the free acid or as a salt, such as a sodium salt, which affects molecular weight and water solubility. Related compounds include nicotinamide riboside and NAD+ itself, but these are distinct molecules with different formulas and cellular handling. Laboratory research often uses the beta form because it matches the naturally occurring configuration found in biological systems.
Small amounts of NMN occur in some foods, including certain vegetables, fruits, and animal products, though the quantities are generally low and variable. Human cells also synthesize NMN internally from nicotinamide and other precursors. Research interest increased after studies examined whether raising NAD+ levels affects metabolism and aging-related pathways in animals. Evidence in humans remains limited and mixed for many outcomes, and questions about effective absorption, tissue delivery, and long-term effects are still open. Regulatory status differs by country, with some markets treating NMN as a supplement ingredient and others restricting its sale.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | White to off-white powder | Typical for solid free acid or salt forms |
| Solubility | Freely soluble in water | Polar nucleotide; limited solubility in nonpolar solvents |
| Typical storage | -20 °C or below | Desiccated, protected from light |
| Common analytical method | LC-MS or HPLC-UV | Used for identity and purity assessment |
| Common synonyms | Nicotinamide ribonucleotide; beta-NMN | NMN is the usual abbreviation |
Analytical measurement of NMN typically uses reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection near 260 nm. Mass spectrometry, often coupled to liquid chromatography, provides sensitive quantification and confirmatory identification in biological matrices. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is used to verify molecular structure and distinguish related nucleotides. Because NMN is polar and poorly retained on conventional reversed-phase columns, ion-pairing reagents or hydrophilic interaction chromatography are sometimes employed. Reported purity values depend on the chosen method, calibration standard, and whether related substances are resolved.
Stability studies indicate that NMN is sensitive to heat, light, and pH extremes. In aqueous solution, hydrolysis can cleave the phosphate linkage or convert NMN to related nicotinamide derivatives, with degradation accelerating at elevated temperatures and alkaline conditions. Solid material is generally more stable when kept dry and cold, and research-grade supplies are often stored at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower, protected from light and moisture. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles of solutions can promote degradation, so aliquoting is a common laboratory practice. The exact shelf life depends on purity, counterion, packaging, and storage history.
Quality control for NMN focuses on identity, purity, and the absence of harmful contaminants. Certificates of analysis may report high-performance liquid chromatography purity, mass spectrometry identity, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbial limits, depending on grade and intended use. Because NMN can exist as different isomers, salts, or hydrates, specification sheets should state the exact form being tested. There is no single globally harmonized purity standard for NMN products. Open questions include which degradation products are most relevant under real-world storage and how analytical results from different laboratories can be compared reliably.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide found in the cells of many organisms. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide group linked to a ribose sugar that carries a phosphate group. NMN is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, a coenzyme involved in many metabolic reactions. The abbreviation usually refers to the beta anomer, though related forms can exist. In scientific literature, NMN is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, another NAD+ precursor.
In the NAD+ salvage pathway, the enzyme NAMPT converts nicotinamide and a phosphate-donor molecule into NMN. A second enzyme, NMNAT, then converts NMN into NAD+. Nicotinamide riboside can also enter this route after being converted to NMN by nicotinamide riboside kinases. Because NMN sits at a junction between precursor uptake and NAD+ formation, its cellular concentration is tightly linked to enzyme activity and tissue type. NAD+ participates in redox reactions, signaling, and DNA repair, and its levels decline with age in some animal models, though human evidence remains more limited and context-dependent.
Research interest in NMN increased after animal studies reported that oral or injected NMN can raise NAD+ levels in some tissues. How NMN is absorbed and distributed in humans is not fully established. Some evidence suggests extracellular NMN may be dephosphorylated to nicotinamide riboside before cellular uptake, while other studies propose specific transport routes. Direct human data on these mechanisms remain limited. Regulatory status also varies: in some countries NMN is treated as a dietary supplement, while elsewhere it is restricted or requires approval, and these differences affect labeling, sale, and research.
==== 2000s ==== In April 2003, Starbucks acquired Seattle's Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia from AFC Enterprises for US$72 million. The deal only gained 150 stores for Starbucks, but according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the wholesale business was more significant. By June 2003, Starbucks Japan had 466 stores and would add another 70 to 75 in the 2003 financial year. Its president, Yuji Tsunoda said it would install ovens in all stores to improve its food offerings. From 2005 to 2007, Howard Behar served as the president of Starbucks North America. In September 2006, rival Diedrich Coffee announced that it would sell most of its company-owned retail stores to Starbucks, including most locations of Oregon-based Coffee People, escalating regional coffee wars. Starbucks converted the Diedrich Coffee and Coffee People locations to Starbucks. The Coffee People locations at Portland International Airport were excluded from the sale. In early 2008, Starbucks started a community website, My Starbucks Idea, designed to collect suggestions and feedback from customers. Other users could comment and vote on suggestions. Journalist Jack Schofield noted that "My Starbucks seems to be all sweetness and light at the moment, which I don't think is possible without quite a lot of censorship." In March 2008, Starbucks acquired Coffee Equipment Company, which was the manufacturer of the Clover Brewing System. It began testing the "fresh-pressed" coffee system at several Starbucks locations in Seattle, California, New York, and Boston.
=== Natural remedies === Studies into treatments to improve low ovarian reserve and low AMH levels have met with some success. Current best available evidence suggests that DHEA improves ovarian function, increases pregnancy chances and, by reducing aneuploidy, lowers miscarriage rates. The studies into DHEA for low AMH show that a dose of 75 mg for a period of 16 weeks should be taken. Improvement of oocyte/embryo quality with DHEA supplementation potentially suggests a new concept of ovarian aging, where ovarian environments, but not oocytes themselves, age. DHEA has positive outcomes for women with AMH levels over 0.8 ng/mL or 5.7 pmol/L. DHEA has no apparent effect on oocytes or ovarian environments under this range. Studies have demonstrated a decline in CoQ levels with age. Studies on CoQ10 supplementation in an aged animal model delayed depletion of ovarian reserve, restored oocyte mitochondrial gene expression, and improved mitochondrial activity. Therefore, CoQ10 is used as a stimulator of the mitochondrial ATP formation in the electron transport chain when it's naturally deficient in ovarian aged patients. Authors note that to replicate the 12–16 weeks of using CoQ10 supplements on mice to achieve these results would be the equivalent to a decade in humans. Vitamin D is believed to play a role in AMH regulation. The AMH gene promoter contains a vitamin D response element that may cause vitamin D status to influence serum AMH levels.
Magnesium sulfate as a medication is used to treat and prevent low blood magnesium and seizures in women with eclampsia. It is also used in the treatment of torsades de pointes, severe asthma exacerbations, constipation, and barium poisoning. It is given by injection into a vein or muscle as well as by mouth. As Epsom salt, it is also used for mineral baths. Common side effects include low blood pressure, skin flushing, and low blood calcium. Other side effects may include vomiting, muscle weakness, and decreased breathing. While there is evidence that use during pregnancy may harm the baby, the benefits in certain conditions are greater than the risks. Its use during breastfeeding is deemed to be safe. The way it works is not fully understood, but is believed to involve depressing the action of neurons. Magnesium sulfate came into medical use at least as early as 1618. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. In 2021, magnesium salts were the 211th most commonly prescribed medication, with more than 2 million prescriptions.
=== In the nervous system === In addition to roles in mediating cell survival, studies by Mark Mattson and others have shown that NF-κB has diverse functions in the nervous system including roles in plasticity, learning, and memory. In addition to stimuli that activate NF-κB in other tissues, NF-κB in the nervous system can be activated by Growth Factors (BDNF, NGF) and synaptic transmission such as glutamate. These activators of NF-κB in the nervous system all converge upon the IKK complex and the canonical pathway. Recently there has been a great deal of interest in the role of NF-κB in the nervous system. Current studies suggest that NF-κB is important for learning and memory in multiple organisms including crabs, fruit flies, and mice. NF-κB may regulate learning and memory in part by modulating synaptic plasticity, synapse function, as well as by regulating the growth of dendrites and dendritic spines. Genes that have NF-κB binding sites are shown to have increased expression following learning, suggesting that the transcriptional targets of NF-κB in the nervous system are important for plasticity. Many NF-κB target genes that may be important for plasticity and learning include growth factors (BDNF, NGF) cytokines (TNF-alpha, TNFR) and kinases (PKAc). Despite the functional evidence for a role for Rel-family transcription factors in the nervous system, it is still not clear that the neurological effects of NF-κB reflect transcriptional activation in neurons.

Psilocybin's psychedelic effects can be blocked by serotonin 5-HT2A receptor antagonists like ketanserin and risperidone in humans. Activation of serotonin 5-HT2A receptors in layer V of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and consequent glutamate release in this area has been especially implicated in the hallucinogenic effects of psilocybin and other serotonergic psychedelics. In addition, region-dependent alterations in brain glutamate levels may be related to the experience of ego dissolution. The cryo-EM structures of the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor with psilocin, as well as with various other psychedelics and serotonin 5-HT2A receptor agonists, have been solved and published by Bryan L. Roth and colleagues. Although serotonin 5-HT2A receptor agonism mediates the hallucinogenic effects of psilocybin and psilocin, activation of other serotonin receptors also appears to contribute to these compounds' psychoactive and behavioral effects. Serotonin 5-HT1A receptor activation seems to inhibit the hallucinogenic effects of psilocybin and other psychedelics. Some of psilocybin's non-hallucinogenic behavioral effects in animals can be reversed by antagonists of the serotonin 5-HT1A, 5-HT2B, and 5-HT2C receptors. Psilocybin produces profoundly decreased locomotor and investigatory behavior in rodents, and this appears to be dependent on serotonin 5-HT1A receptor activation but not on activation of the serotonin 5-HT2A or 5-HT2C receptors.
== Disease management == Crown gall disease caused by Agrobacterium tumefaciens can be controlled by using various methods. The best way to control this disease is to take preventative measures, such as sterilizing pruning tools so as to avoid infecting new plants. Performing mandatory inspections of nursery stock and rejecting infected plants as well as not planting susceptible plants in infected fields are also valuable practices. Avoiding wounding the crowns/roots of the plants during cultivation is important for preventing disease. In horticultural techniques in which multiple plants are joined to grow as one, such as budding and grafting these techniques lead to plant wounds. Wounds are the primary location of bacterial entry into the host plant. Therefore, it is advisable to perform these techniques during times of the year when Agrobacteria are not active. Control of root-chewing insects is also helpful to reduce levels of infection, since these insects cause wounds (a.k.a. bacterial entryways) in the plant roots. It is recommended that infected plant material be burned rather than placed in a compost pile due to the bacteria's ability to live in the soil for many years. Biological control methods are also utilized in managing this disease. During the 1970s and 1980s, a common practice for treating germinated seeds, seedlings, and rootstock was to soak them in a suspension of K84. K84 is a strain of Rhizobium rhizogenes (formerly classified under A. radiobacter, but later reclassified) which is a species related to A. tumefaciens but is not pathogenic.
As his presidency came to a close, the country experienced a financial crisis, resulting in the Great Recession, prompting his administration and Congress to push through emergency economic measures aimed at stabilizing the financial system, including the Troubled Asset Relief Program. After his second term, Bush returned to Texas, where he has maintained a low public profile. At various points in his presidency, he was both among the most popular and among the least popular presidents in U.S. history. He received the highest recorded approval ratings in the wake of the September 11 attacks, and one of the lowest ratings during the 2008 financial crisis. Bush left office as one of the most unpopular U.S. presidents; however, public opinion of him has improved in his post-presidency. Scholars and historians generally rank Bush as a below-average president.

==== Serotonin reuptake enhancer ==== Tianeptine is no longer labelled a selective serotonin reuptake enhancer (SSRE) antidepressant. Tianeptine had been found to bind to the same allosteric site on the serotonin transporter (SERT) as conventional TCAs. However, whereas conventional TCAs inhibit serotonin reuptake by the SERT, tianeptine appeared to enhance it. This seems to be because of the unique C3 amino heptanoic acid side chain of tianeptine, which, in contrast to other TCAs, is thought to lock the SERT in a conformation that increases affinity for and reuptake (Vmax) of serotonin. As such, tianeptine was thought to act a positive allosteric modulator of the SERT, or as a "serotonin reuptake enhancer". Although tianeptine was originally found to have no effect in vitro on monoamine reuptake, release, or receptor binding, upon acute and repeated administration, tianeptine decreased the extracellular levels of serotonin in rat brain without a decrease in serotonin release, leading to a theory of tianeptine enhancing serotonin reuptake. The (−)-enantiomer is more active in this sense than the (+)-enantiomer. However, more recent studies found that long-term administration of tianeptine does not elicit any marked alterations (neither increases nor decreases) in extracellular levels of serotonin in rats. However, coadministration of tianeptine and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine inhibited the effect of tianeptine on long-term potentiation in hippocampal CA1 area.
=== Healthcare === In July 2018, Premier Ford named Rueben Devlin, an orthopedic surgeon who was CEO of Toronto's Humber River Hospital and a "key Tory adviser" and former Ontario PCs president—to a $348,000 a year three-year appointment on the Council on Improving Healthcare and Ending Hallway Medicine, to curb hospital overcrowding. Devlin is the Ford family's "closest health-care adviser." Health costs in Ontario were over $60 billion annually, according to TVO's Steve Paikin. Devlin is tasked with the selection of the other Council members, and with "ending hallway medicine, dental care for seniors, improved mental-health services), all while ensuring stable, long-term funding for the system—Premier Ford's election promises. Since coming into power in June 2018, Premier Ford's government put an approved injection site in Toronto—and several other places—on pause while Health Minister Christine Elliott studied the issue. In February 2019, the Ontario NDP said that two sets of leaked documents show that the Ford government was creating a health "super agency" that "would be in charge of managing health services, quality improvement, patient relations, digital health and tissue donation and transplants, among other responsibilities." The documents said that "long-term care inspections" and the Ontario's "air ambulance service" Ornge would be "outsourced". According to a CTV News report, Minister Elliot was "forced to make assurances" that these services would not be "privatized".

Solid NMN is generally stored in a sealed container at -20 °C or below, protected from light and moisture. Some suppliers recommend a desiccant and inert gas. Aqueous solutions are less stable and are often prepared fresh.
Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy are common identity tests. HPLC with ultraviolet detection can assess purity by peak area. Results are usually compared with a certified reference standard.
Degradation can reduce the amount of intact NMN and create related impurities. Storage conditions and handling therefore affect measured purity and experimental reproducibility. Stability data also inform labeling and shelf-life claims.
NMN stands for nicotinamide mononucleotide. It is a nucleotide composed of nicotinamide, ribose, and phosphate. In cells, it is an intermediate in NAD+ biosynthesis.
